Direct Management Quota Admission in Top NLUS of India Under NRI Sponsor Category Through CLAT

NRI / NRI SPONSORED seats are reserved specifically for students who fill the CLAT Application Form as NRI/NRI Sponsored candidates. For applying under the NRI-sponsored category, they must be sponsored by a “first degree blood relation or second degree blood relation who is an NRI/OCI Card Holder/PIO Card Holder”. They must also appear for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) which is compulsory.

NLU’S have Reserved Seats for those candidates who are either a non resident Indian or have a first degree relationship with NRI, While in some of the cases these seats are also provided to students who even Have a distant relative who is ready to sponsor them ,this is basically known as NRI / NRI SPONSORED Seats.

NRI / NRI SPONSORED Admission in CLAT is gaining high importance because as a matter of fact, out of the 60895 candidates who appeared for CLAT 2023 -7739 applied as NRI/NRI sponsored candidates.

These NRI seats have Higher fees as compared to normal seats, these fees are almost twice or four Times the fees that a normal student pay.

Out of the 23 National Law Universities at present 14 provide Seats Reserved for NRI/NRI Sponsored students.

Out of these 23 NLUs 9 of them do not provide NRI/NRI Sponsored Reserved seats, these include:

 

Each NLU that is providing NRI / NRI SPONSORED Seats for the candidates who applied for CLAT by filling up the form for NRI / NRI SPONSORED in detail while discussing their eligibility criteria and more separately :

1) West Bengal National Law University of Judicial Sciences, Kolkata

There are 20 seats reserved for NRI/NRI Sponsored Category, Candidates in the B.A. LL.B. Programme. NUJS has a common quota for NRI and NRI Sponsored Category candidates.

Interested eligible non-resident Indian candidates are required to apply through CLAT for the seats advertised in CLAT Brochure for NRI/NRI Sponsored category. On declaration of results, candidates who have applied through CLAT for the seats Advertised for NRI/NRI Sponsored category shall be invited to apply online for the NRI/NRI Sponsored category at WBNUJS and submit the supporting documents online.

If no NRI/NRI-sponsored candidates is available on the last date of admission, then The remaining vacant seats shall be filled on the basis of merit treating the vacant seats As unreserved seats.

Persons Eligible for Admission to Seats in the NRI/NRI-Sponsored Category:

A Candidate who has applied through CLAT-2022 for the seats advertised in CLAT-2022 Brochure For NRI/NRI Sponsored category

    1. Who is an NRI/ PIO / OCI or
    2. Who is a daughter or son of an NRI / PIO / OCI, or
    3. Whose legal guardian is an NRI / PIO / OCI or
    4. That is sponsored by an NRI/ PIO/ OCI who has a bona fide interest in the candidate’s Education.

2) National Law University, Bhopal

NLIU Bhopal carries 18 seats reserved for NRI/NRI Sponsored Category, Candidates in the B.A. LL.B. Programme.

Procedure for admission under the category of NRI/NRI Sponsored Cateogory:

The candidates whose who have been given the option as an NRI/NRI Sponsored in the CLAT application Form, are required to do the following

  • Submit duly filled-in application expressing their interest for seeking admission in the prescribed Expression of Interest Form-I (given below) at admission@nliu.ac.in
  • Deposit an amount of ₹1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lac Only) only through electronic mode using https://erp.nliu.ac.in/payment/ in NLIU Bhopal’s account

3) National Law University, Jodhpur

The intake capacity of all the two undergraduate degree programmes (B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons),  B.A., LL.B. (Hons) include 16 seats for NRI/NRI Sponsored. In case of admission under the NRI/NRIs sponsored category, a candidate has to apply as an NRI / NRIs sponsored candidate in CLAT form.

After the publication of the CLAT result, CLAT Office will publish the merit list of NRI / NRIs sponsored candidates and from that merit list applications shall be invited for admission which shall be made strictly on the basis of the aforesaid merit list

Total Fees for UG NRI/NRIs Sponsored candidates – INR 417000 (Per Semester)

4) Gujarat National Law University,

GNLU includes 18 seats available to NRI candidates or Indian nationals sponsored by NRI as per the Supreme Court Guidelines.

Interested candidates are required to refer to the GNLU Website for further details. No transfer of candidates once admitted under NRI and Foreign National category to any another category. Unfilled seats of any category, if any, shall be filled, as per the decision of the GNLU Executive Council

The NRI-UG Candidates are required to pay INR 1,32,000/- and tuition fees of USD 12500.In addition, USD 2000 and USD 500 need to pay by UG & PG candidates respectively as one time development charges.

5) Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow

RMLNU includes 16 seats for NRI/NRI Sponsored. In case of admission under NRI/NRIs sponsored category, a candidate has to apply as a NRI / NRIs sponsored candidate in CLAT form .

Fee amount for NRI / NRI SPONSORED students – ₹ 80,000 /- + $8,000 per annum for both SAARC and Non SAARC countries.

6) Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala

It includes 16 seats for NRI/NRI Sponsored. In case of admission under NRI/NRIs sponsored category, a candidate has to apply as a NRI / NRIs sponsored candidate in CLAT form .

Fee amount for NRI / NRI SPONSORED students – Rs.1,15,000 + $ 6,000 per annum

7) National Law University Odisha, Cuttack

Candidates who wish to apply to B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) / B.B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) / LL.M. Programmes under NRI / NRI Sponsored / PIO / OCI Categories need to send the duly filled in application form, other relevant documents and a proof of deposit of application fees etc. directly to the University through www.admissions@nluo.ac.in .

The application form can be downloaded from our Website i.e. www.nluo.ac.in The application fee of ₹ 20,000/- (Rupees Twenty Thousand only) must be sent through NEFT/RTGS to the bank details given on official website. It includes 15 seats for NRI/NRI Sponsored.

8) Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU) Visakhapatnam

DSNLU includes 12 seats for NRI/NRI Sponsored. In case of admission under NRI/NRIs sponsored category, a candidate has to apply as a NRI / NRIs sponsored candidate in CLAT form .

The Candidates are required to pay the following fees by separate Demand Drafts drawn on any Nationalized Bank, in favour of ‘Registrar, Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University’ payable at Visakhapatnam for the confirmation of admission. Payment can be also be made through RTGS or NEFT.

9) National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi

It includes 18 seats for for NRI & Foreign National Reservation. In case of admission under NRI  category, a candidate has to apply as a NRI candidate in CLAT form.

10) Maharashtra National Law University, Mumbai

The University reserves the right to operate Supernumerary seats for  B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) Programme as follows:

20 (Twenty) supernumerary seats under FN/NRI/NRI Sponsored category for B.A., LL.B. (Hons.); and 10 (Ten) seats for B.B.A., LL.B. (Hons.). Preference will be  given in the order of FN, NRI and NRI Sponsored.

All applicants are required to pay the Application fee of INR 5000 (or USD 100) in case the Remittance is made from abroad, by using the payment gateway details

11) The Tamil Nadu National Law School, Tiruchirapalli

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) & B.Com. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course offered by Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchirappalli, under Non-Resident Indian(NRI) Quota/Overseas Citizens of India(OCI).

Total number of Seats – 6

(i) B.A. LL.B.(Hons.) – 3

(ii) B.Com. LL.B.(Hons.) – 3

Two different categories of applicants will be considered for admission under NRI/OCI Quota as indicated below:

Category-I: NRI/OCI parent

The Parent (Father or Mother) of candidates seeking admission should be a NRI/OCI.

Category-II: NRI/OCI Guardian

If the candidate has no parent where he/she has been taken as a ward by a near Relative or someone and such NRI/OCI guardian has been legally declared as the Guardian of the candidate by the Court as per the provision of Guardians and Wards Act, 1890.

Note: In addition to the above fees (payable in US dollars), candidates selected under NRI/OCI should pay other fee and user charges in equivalent US dollars as prescribed for other candidates in Indian Rupees

12) Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla

Admission to the category of ‘International Students’ And ‘NRI’ shall be direct admission on the basis of Inter-se merit of the qualifying examination after due Verification of equivalent and eligibility conditions. All International Students and ‘NRI’ candidates must apply Directly to the Registrar, HPNLU Shimla on prescribed Admission form (available at HPNLU website) along With the demand draft of 3000/- in favour of the Registrar, HPNLU, payable at Shimla.

13) Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur

There is one more category that is the ONLY way through which a student directly takes admission in National law universities , without giving any type of entrance examination whether it is CLAT or AILET which is known as Foreign National Seats. Seats listed as Foreign Nationals/OCI/PIO by NLUs.

Most of them have already declared that if these vacancies are still left then these are ultimately converted to NRI/NRI Sponsored or Unreserved Seats or remain vacant.

There are a list of NLUs that are not providing Foreign National Seat Reservation: NLSIU, NALSAR Hyderabad, CNLU Patna, NLU Assam, MNLU Nagpur, NLU Aurangabad, DBRANLU Haryana

This has proved out to be relief for general category students for those who can pay more , this issue is in debate as it is considered to be Reservation for the Elites, as these NRI seats have Higher fees as compared to normal seats, these fees are almost twice or four Times the fees that a normal student pay.
